Fishing and pearling were the main businesses at the time. By the 20th century, it grew to be an empire.

The late His Highness Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum, ruler of Dubai from 1958 – 1990 and Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan are credited with opening up the economy of the emirate and letting it prosper.

When the souk on the Deira side of the creek expanded and the creek began to silt in the 1950s, the late Ruler of Dubai, His Highness Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum, hashe waterway dredged. Although it was a costly and tough thing to do, it went on to put Dubai on the world map of tourism and trade. Liners and ships from all over the world started coming to Dubai.

By 1971-1972, Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Fujairah and Ras Al Khaimah was joined to create the United Arab Emirates. The growth of Dubai as an emirate has been tremendous. Dubai is now a city with world-class facilities and unimaginable wealth.
