If Dubai is known as a tourism and business hub of the world, it is due to the skills of its rulers. The reigning Al Maktoum family has ruled Dubai since 1833. Along with the Maktoum Famil, some 800 of the Bani Yas tribe came to the mouth of the creek in 1833. Since then it’s been a centre for trade. Fishing and pearling were the main businesses at the time. By the 20th century, it grew to be an empire.
The late His Highness Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum, ruler of Dubai from 1958 – 1990 and Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan are credited with opening up the economy of the emirate and letting it prosper.
On 1 February 2008, HH Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum was proclaimed Crown Prince of Dubai. He is also Chairman of Dubai's Executive Council. The Deputy Rulers of Dubai are HH Sheikh Maktoum bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum and HH Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum. HH Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum is also the UAE’s Minister of Finance.
By the 20th century Dubai became a successful port. When the souk on the Deira side of the creek expanded and the creek began to silt in the 1950s, the late Ruler of Dubai, His Highness Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum, hashe waterway dredged. Although it was a costly and tough thing to do, it went on to put Dubai on the world map of tourism and trade. Liners and ships from all over the world started coming to Dubai.
The best thing to happen to Dubai happened in 1966 – oil was discovered. The revenue from the oil spurred even more businesses and industries. It brought many settlers to Dubai. The largest man-made harbor in the world was constructed at Jebel Ali, and a free zone was created around the port.
By 1971-1972, Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Fujairah and Ras Al Khaimah was joined to create the United Arab Emirates. The growth of Dubai as an emirate has been tremendous. Dubai is now a city with world-class facilities and unimaginable wealth.
